Ace Inhibitors ( HTN & CHF)
Benazepril (lotensin), Captopril (capoten), Enalapril (vasotecp), Enalaprilat (vasotec IV), Fosinopril (monopril), Lisinopril (prinivil), Moexipril (univasc), perundopril (aceon), Quinapril (accupril), ramipril (altace), Trandolapril (mavik). Definition: Prevent the synthesis of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor; used to treat HTN, HF, and kidney disease. Action: Ace inhibitors reduce afterload by blocking angiotensin II-mediated peripheral vasoconstriction
Angiotensin II Receptor blockers/antagonist (ARBs)
Irnesartan (avapro), Losartan (cozaar), Valsartan (diovan) Acts by binding to angiotensin II receptor sites, preventing angiotensin II (vasoconstrictor) from binding to receptor sites in vascular smooth muscle, brain, heart, kidneys, and adrenal glands, thus blocking the blood pressure-elevating and sodium-retaining effects of angiotensin II. Used in patients who do not tolerate ACE inhibitors because of cough or angio edema ( swelling of tissues).
Antiarrhythmics
Amiodarone (cordatone), Ibutilide (corvert), Sotalol (Betapace) Used to correct cardiac disrhythmias. They slow the response of heart muscle to nervous system stimulation or slow the rate at which nervous system impulses are carried through the heart
Beta-blockers
Atenolol (tenormin), Carvedilol (coreg), metropolol (lopressor, toprol-XL), Propranolol (inderal) Inhibit the activity of sympathetic transmitters, norepinephrine and epinephrine. Used to treat Angina, dysrhythmias, hypertension, and glaucoma.
Calium Channel blockers/Calcium Ion antagonist
Amlodipine, Amlodipine besylate (norvasc), Nifidepine (adalat CC, procardia), Diltiazem (cardizem CD) Inhibit the mvement of calcium ions across the cell membrane. Used to decrease dysrhythmias, slow rate of contraction of the heart, and cause vadodilation.
Digitalis glycoside, Cardiac glycoside, Cardiotonic
Digoxin (lanoxin) Increase the force of contraction (positive inotropy) and slow the heart rate (negative chronotropy), reducing the cunduction velocity and prolonging the refractory period at the atrioventricular (AV) node. Used for mild to severe systolic heart failure not responding to diuretics, beta blockers, and ACE inhibitors; afib, atrial flutter, paroxysmal tachycardia Antidote: Digibind
Bile Acid-Binding Resins
Cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam Resins bind bile acids in the intestine. Used in conjunction with dietary therapy to decrease elevated cholesterol concentrations in hyperlipidemia
