What is a bone
It is an organ made of different tissues
Connective tissue
is a cartilage
Hyaline cartilage
Is the most abudant skeletal cartilage, and includes the articular, costal, respiratory, and nasal cartilages
Elastic cartilages
Are more flexible than hyaline, and are located in the external ear and epiglottis of the larynx.
Fibrocartilage
Located in areas that withstand a great deal of pressure or stretch. Such as the cartilages of the knee and intervertebral discs.
2 main divisions of the bones of the skeleton
Axial skeleton, and Appendicular skeleton.
Axial skeleton
consiststs of the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage.
The appendicular skeleton
Consists of the bones of the upper and lower limbs that attachthem to the axial skeleton.
Long bones
They are longer than they are wide, have a definite shaft and two ends. They consist of all limb bones except patellas, carpals, and tarsals.
Short bones
Are somewhat cube shaped and include the carpals and tarsals
Flat bones
Are thin, flattend, often curved bones that include most of the skull bones, the sternum, scapulae, and ribs.
Ireggular bones
have complicated shapes that do not fit any other class, such as the vertebrae and coxae.
What are the function of bones
  1. Bones support the body
  2. Cradle the soft organs, protect vital organs
  3. Allow movement of the body by acting like levers when muscle contracts
  4. Stores minerals such as calcium and phosphate
  5. The site of blood production
  6. stores triglycerides in yellow bone marrow.
