Classification
Electrolyte solution
Action
counteracts the toxicity of hyperkalemia by stabilizing the membranes of the cardiac cells, reducing the likelihood of fribrillation
Indications
hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia, hypermagnesemia
Adverse effects
soft tissue necrosis, hypotension, bradycardia (if administered too rapidly)
Contraindications
VF, digitalis toxicity, hypercalcemia
Dosage (adult)
supplied as a 10% solution; therefore each mL contains 100 mg of calcium gluconate

500-1000 mg, IV, IO administered slowly at a rate of approximately 1-1.5 mL/min

Max dose 3 g IV, IO
Dosage (ped)
supplied as a 10% solution; therefore each mL contains 100 mg of calcium gluconate

60-100 mg/kg IV, IO slowly over a 5-10 minute period

Max dose of 3 g IV, IO
Special considerations
do not administer by IM or Sub-Q route, which causes significant tissue necrosis
