Overview

Ryzen is the name that has been mentioned thousands of times recently. AMD, after a while being dominated by Intel, finally rose to claim the throne again by its Ryzen lineup. Ryzen CPUs outclass Intel CPUs in the same price range in terms of performance and graphics card compatibility. However, when it comes to security and additional features, they’re still losing the game. In this article, we’ll talk about the Ryzen 7 2700x CPU lineup, and the best motherboards for Ryzen 7 2700x.

Buying Guides

What is Ryzen 7 2700x? Ryzen 7 2700x is one of the best CPUs introduced in 2018 by AMD. It is manufactured by the technology of 12 nanometers, which is a little older than the latest Intel 10th generation’s 10nm technology.

The Ryzen 2700 includes 8 physical cores, and due to the hyperthreading technology, it can handle 16 threads simultaneously at the same time. The base CPU clock is 3.2GHz, and is capable of turbo boosting to 4.1GHz.

It has 16MBs of Level 3 cache, supports 16 lanes of PCIe revision 3.0, 2 channels of DDR4 2933MHz of RAM. Finally, in terms of compatibility, it features the AM4 socket, which is relatively popular in the world of gamers and creators.

1. The socket

Ryzen 7 2700x, as we said, uses an AM4 socket, which is also made by AMD. This socket is said to be compatible with multiple AMD CPU lineups, just like Intel’s. Here is the list of compatible CPU series:

  • AMD Ryzen 2000 series.

  • AMD Ryzen 3000 series with Radeon Graphics.

  • AMD Ryzen 3000 series Processors.

  • AMD Ryzen 5000 series.

Be noted that this is the list at the current writing time, and the list can go on in the future when new lineups and processor models are introduced, because the brands always want its newest CPUs to work perfectly with the previously introduced sockets and mainboards, so they will only change when it’s needed.

The reason why we give that list out is, in the future, there will be highly probable that you want to upgrade your computer hardware, so you would want to know if your socket is compatible with your new CPUs.

2. PCIe

PCIe 4.0 is the newest PCI revision being applied in commercial motherboards. PCIe 4.0 is not supported by the Ryzen 7 2700x, but it is indeed supported by the socket AM4. Ryzen 7 2700x supports 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0, but in the future, if you want to upgrade to a CPU compatible with PCIe 4.0, you’ll know that you can do it.

With the AM4 socket and the Ryze 7 2700x, your motherboard will likely be compatible with all the latest NVMe SSDs, graphics cards, and external components.

3. Storage

Apart from PCIe support, the CPU also offers up to 12 interfaces of SATA 6Gbps, which is equivalent to 750 MB/s transfer rate for a little slower SSD drives.

For external connections, the motherboard can handle 4 USB HiSpeed 480Mbps (60 MB/s) and 8 USB SuperSpeed+ at 10Gbps (1250 MB/s), so you can also connect to portable SSD drives, docks, your external secondary monitor, and pretty much anything else.

AMD has also partnered with other storage manufacturers and recommended some of the best storage for the Ryzen 7 2700x, including:

  • AORUS  NVMe Gen 4 SSD (1-2 TB) with up to 5000/4400 MB/s R/W rate.

  • Corsair MP600 Gen.4 NVMe M.2 (500GB - 2TB) at up to 4950/4250 MB/s R/W rate.

  • Samsung 980 Pro (up to 1TB) at 7000/5000 MB/s R/W rate.

  • WD Black SN850 (up to 2TB) at up to 7000/5300 MB/s R/W rate.

4. Sizes of the motherboard

To make your motherboard compatible with Ryzen 7 2700x, the motherboard has to have an AM4 socket. AM4 socket can literally be fit in any form factors; however, this is the list of the most popular form factor for the AM4 socket, which means the best motherboards for Ryzen 7 2700x:

  • ATX: the most popular form factor introduced by Intel, which looks like a golden ratio rectangle.

  • Mini-ITX: The squared form factor, introduced to reduce significantly the size of the computer but still maintaining the performance and cooling capabilities.

  • EATX: The form factor made for servers, racks, etc. This is usually bigger than ATX and features a more effective cooling solution.

5. Cooling system

Cooling system is the most important factor that contributes to the decision of users on a PC over a laptop. Most motherboards try their best to have a built-in cooling solution, and manage to support other advanced cooling solutions.

Editing videos or playing games are among others the most extreme tasks pressuring the computer. Consequently, the computer produces a lot of heat doing the tasks. The need now is to distribute the tremendous amount of heat to cool the system down, helping prevent the system from exploding, and performance dropping.

These efforts are made to achieve one true goal, to keep the system performance stabilized. Two types of cooling system are used, which are:

  • Air cooling system: The noise you often hear when turning on the computer is the noise of the fan or fans. The fans are designed to make an air flow around the computer to distribute the heat and eventually for the heat to escape through the tiny holes on the mainframe. The aluminum case on some modern laptops also helps to do it because metals conduct heat better than plastic, and metals are thinner.

  • Water/Liquid cooling system: This type of cooling system results in a very big and monstrously designed laptop. Water cooling provides a silent solution to flow the heat out of the mainboard; it does that much more effectively than air cooling without making any sound at all. Heat is taken out of the CPU by a special type of liquid or on some cheaper version, water, that always flows around a closed set of tubes, carrying the heat outside. Again, this type of system has nothing to be criticized, but the drawback here is the price. It’s so expensive that it can’t be used in normal affordable computers.

6. Special requirements

  • More HDMI ports: HDMI ports can be extended by buying an additional graphics card; however, if you want to be supported out of the box, you might want to look for motherboards with lots of HDMI connections

Wi-Fi and Ethernet: Some motherboards even try to defaultly integrate Wi-Fi network cards into the board. It takes up PCIe lanes, unfortunately, to connect to the built-in Wi-Fi; however, you get better support and speed compared to USB-connected Wi-Fi dongle or optionally purchased Wi-Fi PCIe network cards.

FAQs

1. What does it mean by gigabit ethernet?

Traditional Ethernet card supports the network speed of 100Mbps, which stands for Megabits per second. In order to transfer a byte, the link needs to at least transfer 8 bits, not to mention error handling and other advanced bits. Thus, 100Mbps means that the maximum speed it can achieve in the perfect situations is 12.5 MB/s.

Gigabit Ethernet uses the link speed at 1Gbps, which can send up to 125MB/s. In the same method, we can see the 2.5G Ethernet would support the speed of 312.5MB/s and 10G Ethernet supports the speed of 1.25GB/s.

2. What is M.2?

Traditionally, PCI interfaces are meant for graphics cards and SATA interfaces are meant for storage. In the age of NVMe SSDs whose internal reading and writing speeds have surpassed the speed of SATA 3 at 6Gbps, they have created the M.2 standard.

On some websites you might find yourselves confused between the M.2 2280 and M.2 2242. 2280 or 2242 represents the form factor of the M.2 interface, where 22 is the height in millimeters and 80 is the width in millimeters. Check your form factor on your mainboard and SSD is a must before buying both.

3. How can I use my mainboard?

To use your motherboard, you’ll need the following components:

  • A processor, that needs to be compatible with the socket and the mainboard.

  • RAM (Random Access Memory).

  • At least one boot drive (it can either be an HDD or SSD or even USB Flash).

  • A set of mouse and keyboard.

  • Monitor.

  • Power supply that fits the form factor (typically ATX).

  • Power cord, HDMI or VGA cable, Ethernet cable, or Wi-Fi network.

  • A case.

  • Optional water cooling solution.

And the tools:

  • A screwdriver.

  • A manual.

Everything about installing a computer should be available in the manual that comes with your device. Be sure to handle the components with care, especially the socket and the processor, because they’re easy to break and expensive to replace.

4. What about the warranty?

The mainboards don’t seem to break easily. Most popular mainboard breaks often fall into water spill or socket damage. In those cases, you’d not be warranted because it’s your fault. However, motherboards come with a one-year or three-year warranty policy, depending on the brand.

5. How do I know what power supply fits my motherboard?

To check the power supply, you need to notice the voltage and the current it can provide. It has to be at least equal to the power needed by the form factor (mostly ATX definition) in order for the mainboard to boot up. Otherwise, it would not work or even damage itself because of the low voltage.
